The artists

Through the reading of the letters´ extracts translated into French, the refined play of José Ponce highlights the reality and humanity of the condemned man. He sets up a visual dimension with chalk drawings that he imagined with the photographer Noé Cauderay. The organic music and sound effects, played live by Joséphine Maillefer, create an evocative atmosphere. The two artists unite their talents in a very emotional scenic performance.

José Ponce
Actor

Chameleon actor, author-adaptor and director (later in his career), reader and film-lover.

José Ponce graduated from the Dramatic Art School of Geneva in 1989 and co-founded the “Feu théâtre du Garage”: legendary location of the underground theater world in Geneva. He never stopped giving outstanding performances at the Little Republic at the tip of the Léman Lake and in other various locations.

Today, he tries to harmoniously wear his acting, reading and directing hats; always ready to clear out unbeaten tracks.

More than ever obsessed by his desire for words, he tries to reach the uninhibited and captivating style of authors like Pierre Guyotat...

Joséphine Maillefer
Musician

Artiste, composer, flutist, director of choir, flute teacher, president of the association Inmates'Voices and cyclist in the city of Lausanne.

Her brillant studies at the Conservatory of Lausanne led her from flute to composition in various styles such as classical music, pop, jazz and electronic music.

She mingles her art in theaters and movies and creates several artistic projects such as MyFairMusic or Inmates' Voices.
More than a hobby or a job, music allows her to nurture and pass on human values and, who knows, change the world ?
Roy Swafford
Autor

Roy Swafford is 67 years old, half Cherokee, half Irish. Sentenced to death in 1985 for rape and murder, he claims his innocence and waits for 29 years on Florida Death Row for an execution date.

For the last two years, he has been exchanging letters with Joséphine Maillefer, thanks to the association Lifespark.

Through these letters, Roy rediscovers the outside world and has the opportunity to thoughtfully escape his cell, to live by proxy and to forget the prison routine for a while.    .

His letters are written with simple and touching words. Full of humanity, they resonate in a very universal way and give the chance to the readers to identify themselves to their contents.

His favorite saying: “Enjoy Life!”
